Presale tickets went on sale to day for Mixfest 2007 at Agganis Arena (Boston University) hosted by Mix 98.5. Matchbox Twenty will headline the show (read a review of Matchbox Twenty). Other acts slated to appear include Daughtry, Mat Kearney, Blue October (read a review) and Colbie Caillat.
The show will take place on September 29, 2007 at Agganis Arena, approximately 7,200 seat capacity for concerts, which makes this one of the most intimate MixFests ever (read a review of MixFest 98.5 10th Anniversary.)
My esteem for both Rob Thomas has grown considerably in the last few years almost entirely due to his solo release Something to Be
. Matchbox Twenty songs were ubiquitous on the radio ten years ago, and even though my feelings for their older stuff is hit or miss, I’m excited to see them again and give the band another chance.
Likewise, I didn’t have great things to say about Blue October the first time I saw them, but their performance was solid enough that I gave their studio albums a chance. Their last album Foiled
was wholly accessible and Hate Me is one of the most amazing songs I’ve heard in years. I had tickets to their last Boston show, but they cancelled after Justin Furstenfeld broke his leg and needed surgery.
Daughtry is supposed to be a good live act, and while I’m not gushing for them, I watched American Idol and Daughtry got whacked off that show (my favorite theory is that American Idol knew he would have a successful music career and didn’t need the boost of a win the way Taylor Hicks did. And see how much good it did for Hicks.)
Mat Kearney is currently making radio waves, but Undeniable is just annoying. Still, I sat through a set from Michelle Branch, I am pretty much steeled for anything.
Colbie Caillat sounds like a porn name.

Josh Allen Band: the reason I picked this place, average-quality music that is quiet enough to allow conversation; Josh Allen and the Whiskey Bros.: the place has changed, music was very loud and much better than what I’d seen in visits past but was very loud, garagey bluesy Southern rock band, did cover of Pixie’s Where Is My Mind, music was very loud

really interesting band, mix of calypso and rock, looked as I imagine The Decemberists do, pack of fresh-faced little boys bounding all over the stage in a jam party, had shakers, keyboard, guitars, drums, must have been 7 guys, Kid on My Shoulder is still their best song, good eggs

third time I’ve seen them and you know I’m against that, they’re darling and the lead singer has gotten braver: invited guys up on stage and then immediately warned a drunk one Don’t touch me!, wasn’t as impressed with their music but possibly just poor attitude on my part

this was the indoors show and what a difference it was: death-metal / screamo with some rap nuances and I couldn’t stop giggling at them, they took themselves way too seriously, so full of their own testosterone had to take the shirts off, eyes rolling back in the head, jesus poses, and all the 18 year olds in the crowd throwing devil horns, very very intense and I suppose they’re good at what they do, dreadlocked 45 year old (possibly 25 and just wracked by drugs) suddenly turned to me and pointed to his eye… his heart… and then me… I stood out in my skirt and heels, the merchandise metalhead gave me a stack of stuff for free because I asked the name of the band

kept thinking they must be from Detroit like next band because of their garagey sound but turned out to be from Nashville, female drummer, good stage activity, garage with some heavy riffs, quite liked it though uninspiring in the end

i.e., me vs. Rockboy and Rockboy won; The Hackles: played Mean Eyed Cat, Rock Island Line and Folsom Prison Blues… all Johnny Cash and I was mad at their neglect of Tom but they ended up being the best band that I saw, upright bass, energetic; Kevin Sekhani: lead singer from the Box Spring Hogs (the Tom Wait cover band) took the mic and was really horrible, he apparently can’t lose the gravel voice, plus the sound suddenly went haywire and the violinist was piercing our ears while the vocals were muted (though loud enough to hear the horror of the voice), gravel voice stomped angrily off the stage saying It could have been worse, later saw him kiss a screaming wench of a drug whore and then shake his head and chuckle at his own depravity – a young dumpy girl took the stage and sang Stop Draggin’ My Heart by Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty, she did a much better job; Reid Wilson and His So-Called Friends: three Boulder, Colorado sorts clustered around one mic with banjo and such singing to each other, sound continued to be so bad that they were completely inaudible, ended with a whispery Ring of Fire; Grub Dog and the Modestos: sound and attitudes got fixed though the keyboards could have been toned down in this band, did Cash’ Boy Called Sue and some other song; Fearsome McPete: Unrockgirl’s man drums for this band, their name is apparently in flux, met the bassist and his pregnant wife, bassist seemed embarrassed at his lame friend’s puppy dog slavering and antics to catch Unrockgirl’s attention

first song was tight and pop-hard with the Jenny Lewis lookalike and Moby with some hair lookalike singing in French (a little) but quickly disintegrated into being far too typical once guy took over and sang in a high school I-want-to-be-a-rocker voice

Kyuss like but more thrash, drummer was cute with curly hair but lead vocalist distracted in his red sweatpants and red head sweat band and red wrist sweat bands

from Apple Valley! or Hesperia!, and really really good, punk with only a little bit of rockabilly, lead singer was very reminiscent of Gwen Stefani and was an excellent showwoman – confident and full of weird faces, fantastic musicians as well, especially the upright bass player, their name comes from a Simpsons episode

kept thinking it was Dueling Banjos but it was one guy wailing along to his banjo, he was okay for about 1 minute, got better when a guitarist joined him, took himself way too seriously

an amalgam of people play there every week and the bartender makes up a new name for them each time, this week there were two people from Chicago and they were playing hard blues, there was a 19 year old on stage too
